I can get a good CTR by going 'ugly' as well - and placing the adsense so they can't avoid looking at it... but this makes for spammy looking sites that don't get repeat traffic and don't get natural backlinks easily... But regarding adsense sites, SEO is the only important factor, or it means a lot more them webdesign. For me, the uglyer the template, the better, so, webdesign? for what? to loose money on a magazine/fancy looking and eyes distractor? forget webdesign, focus on SEO and leave the default theme on. I agree that webdesign should be used with SEO, and they both work well together.
